Richie Sambora once unlocked his guitar case and played in front of a group of guys who were looking to replace their lead guitarist. It turns out Richie did not get the offer to join the band he just auditioned for, but according to him that’s just fine.
The band that sent him packing from the audition was Kiss!
First, Richie has had a great run with Jon Bon Jovi. Secondly, he felt like the members of Kiss wanted someone who totally wanted to be in the band. He liked their music, but wasn’t going to idolize them.
Did you know that Patty Smyth was asked multiple times to be the lead for Van Halen? Daryl Hall was also asked by Sammy Hagar to join Van Halen. In April of this year Axl Rose was brought aboard AC/DC to replace Brian Johnson, but earlier Kiss also flew out lead singer Lee Robinson of the AC/DC tribute band ‘Thunderstruck’ to audition him as well.
