Most everyone when asked, will name Los Angeles or New York as the most influential rock and roll cities. Detroit gave us the MC5, Bob Seger, (oaky we’re cheating just a bit here) Eminem, all of Motown, Bill Haley and the Comets, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, and Grand Funk Railroad (Flint). Glenn Frey began in suburban Detroit, and Ted Nugent and Alice Cooper called Detroit home in the early days.

Chicago was the birthplace of Chicago Transit Authority (later to be known as Chicago) and Earth Wind & Fire as big bands from the Windy City. We’ll also count Styx, Cheap Trick, and REO Speedwagon as rockers from Chicago, though they began in the suburbs.
