Our Favorite Films Based Off the Bands Themselves

Legendary film producer Ron Howard hit a home run this year with his documentary “Beatles; Eight Days a Week,” but then Hollywood has always been fascinated with music and the artists who created wonderful songs. Here are a few of our favorite films that centered around our favorite bands and singers…

“Rock Around the Clock” the Bill Haley and the Comets classic, starring Alan Freed, released in 1956. The film featured the Platters, and is considered the first popular film about rock and roll.

“This is Spinal Tap” is the modern day rock parody, released in 1984. This film is a dry and satirical look at a fading rock and roll band in the 80s, dearly trying to hold on to what decency they have left. Michael McKean and Christopher Guest are fabulous in this movie.

Filmed in late 1969, “Let It Be” was a raw documentary of the making of the LP of the same name, featuring their last public appearance of the Beatles on a rooftop.

The Rolling Stones “Gimmie Shelter,” “The Buddy Holly Story,” “La Bamba,” “That Thing You Do,” and to a lesser extent ‘Rock of Ages” all chronicle rock and roll in film.
