Back in July, multi-genre Yola released Stand For Myself, her second studio album. In a recent interview, she expresses how this album was an opportunity to “genuinely” be herself.

“I’m rolling out songs on this record that finally reflects my confidence,” the Grammy-nominated artist explains.

For the lyricism behind Stand For Myself, Yola was able to collaborate with Black women co-writers, like Joy Oladokun. Calling these empowering shots and captaining the creation of her own music is “vital.” Yola stands by her agency, taking nothing less as she moves forward and upward in her career: “This album doesn’t get made unless I’m met where I am and where I want to take my art is respected.”
