This Year’s American Music Awards Red Carpet Was All About Fun

The music industry’s biggest names were out in force at the 47th American Music Awards.  It was not a night for demure eveningwear at LA’s Microsoft Theater, as it was all about sparkle, trains and bright colors at this year’s awards. If Sunday night’s red carpet was anything to go by, they came to have fun.

If you were going to wear a dress, you needed to make it pop with sequins, a train, or a big leg reveal, or maybe all three, like Carrie Underwood did with her purple sequined Stello by Stephanie Costello gown with thigh high slit and long train. Taylor Swift also wowed with the leg reveal in a green sequined Julien Macdonald gown with black over-the-knee Casadei boots as did Camila Cabello in a strapless high-low Oscar de la Renta gown with a long tulle train and Djula jewelry.  Others that did up the slit up to here and train down to there were Paula Abdul, Megan Thee Stallion, and Misty Copeland.

Some stars chose to do it up with wowza pantsuits like Kelsesa Ballerini who sparkled In a red and silver sequined ensembele, which included a jacket which she wore open with nothing underneath. For jewelry, she wore an Âme ring and Alyson Stoner in a bedazzled Malan Breton suit and a reflective Graham Cruz corset top.  Others who donned the smart suit style were Tyra Banks, Ciara In an all-bright blue Balmain ensemble consisting of bell bottoms and an oversized striped blazer, and Carole King in her sleek and sparkly black top and matching black slack/suit ensemble.

The bright fluorescent hue club included Lil Nas X in a bright fluorescent green zoot suit, Dua Lipa in her hot pink gown with giant black velvet bow at her thigh high slit and matching black pumps (with obligatory matching giant bows), and Selena Gomez in a skin tight strapless lime green Versace minidress and matching heels that made it look like her cleavage was going to explode. Gomez also rocked another trend – the short, short skirt as rocked by the ageless Heidi Klum in her minidress with silver metallic top and blue feathered bodice/skirt. Lizzo pulled off this combo look best in a bright orange ruffled dress by Valentino, which she paired with a micro purse by the Italian label.

There were a couple of notable over-the-top ensembles that had some critics clapping and others scratching their heads.

Kesha made her grand return to the AMAs by rocking head-to-toe Versace: a robe, skin-tight boots and a hefty amount of matching gold jewelry. The “Raising Hell” singer looked like she’d stepped right out the shower with her wet-look wavy hair and minimal makeup that highlighted her cat-like eyes.

Halsey continues to experiment with her red carpet looks and her latest one was quite the showstopper. The night’s winner for favorite pop/rock song for “Without Me” wore a floor-sweeping floral gown that revealed lilac, peach, light blue and pink colors as it flowed on the carpet. But the alternative-leaning singer made sure not to make things too girly. Her eye makeup resembled a painting with its abstract pattern going matchy-matchy with her dress and her hair was done in a funky top knot.

Among the most talked-about singers on the red carpet was Billie Eilish, who arrived dressed almost entirely in Burberry check. She accessorized a loose-fit top and wide-leg pants from the heritage brand with a crystal mesh bonnet and sparkling veil — a look reminiscent of her Burberry ski-mask festival outfit that set Instagram alight back in August.

Christina Aguilera made a strong goddess statement in an embellished white long-sleeve Jean Paul Gaultier gown with attached hood and exaggerated strong-shoulder accents. She cinched the look with a wide belt, rocked platform white boots and accessorized with pearl rings and multi-strand necklaces.

And no red-carpet roundup would be complete without mentioning Billy Porter, the master of capes — and grand entrances. This time around, the actor wore a structured white Thom Browne cape embroidered with marine life and an avant-garde headpiece, perforated with holes of various sizes, by milliner Stephen Jones.
