There’s No Business Like Show Business for Gucci Spring 2019

Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, has a fascination with old Hollywood glamour and he doesn’t care who knows it. Recent collections have included nods to iconic Los Angeles landmarks like the Chateau Marmont and Paramount Studios. Last year the design house even held a party for the new faces of its Guilty fragrances inside the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Michele took this romantic view of showbiz and turned it into a dazzling ad campaign for Gucci’s Spring 2019 collection. Shot by Glen Luchford, the imagery and corresponding video take inspiration from old Hollywood films from the 1940s and ’50s, including “An American in Paris,” “Cover Girl,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and “Singin’ in the Rain.” There’s glitz, glitter and glamour aplenty, as well as a lively mix of bright colors and a dash of humor. Even the teaser clips for the campaign include tongue-in-cheek faux red carpet interviews at an imaginary premiere of a Gucci musical, including one with a ditzy actress (accompanied by a dopey, long-haired date) who allegedly can communicate with birds.

Finally, a choreographed clip set to the Irving Berlin classic “There’s No Business Like Show Business” features Gucci-clad characters lip synching to Ethel Merman’s iconic vocals, dancing, directing and working behind the scenes, making for a Technicolor musical extravaganza that exquisitely depicts Michele’s wild imagination. Let’s go on with the show!
