Florida is the Sunshine State. It’s also the state that gave us many great bands. This list will surprise you. Creed, the religious leaning rock band starring Scott Stapp, hails from Tallahassee, starting their rock journey in 1993. Creed sold nearly 40 million records in their career. Let’s get to a few more…

Lynyrd Skynyrd met in high school in Jacksonville, and named their band after their favorite (or least favorite teacher, as he continued to bust their chops about the length of their hair) Leonard Skinner.

Debbie Harry from the group Blondie was born in Miami but moved to New Jersey at the age of 3, while Jim Morrison was born in Melbourne.

Tom Petty worked on the campus of the University of Florida as a teenager, and his dad was furious with him that he didn’t; attend the school and set out to be a rock star. They reconciled years later.

The Outlaws are from Tampa and had considerable success with their popular singles “There Goes Another Love Song” and “Green Grass and High Tides.” The band began in the late 60s and continue to tour today.

Molly Hatchet, Matchbox 20, 38 Special, Limp Bizkit, Jim Morrison, Gary US Bonds, Bertie Higgins, Carter Cornelius, Pat Boone and Claude “Butch” Trucks from the Allman Brothers are all from the state of Florida.
