It’s not uncommon for a band or singer to take an album to Broadway in a production that not only sells tickets, but expands their fan base and brand. What are the best rock and roll plays on 42nd street over the years? The list will surprise you…

‘Tommy,’ the Who’s story of a deaf, dumb and blind kid appeared on Broadway in 1993, featuring the songs from the album of the same name. Written by Peter Townshend, the production earned 11 Tony Award nominations.

Elton John took ‘The Lion King’ to 42nd street in 1997, selling out opening night in frenzy, and becoming Broadway’s fourth longest-running show in history.

Billy Joel, no stranger to New York, brought ‘Moving Out’ to the Broadway stage in 2002, detailing a Long Island child growing up during the Vietnam War.

‘We Will Rock You’ from Queen, ‘Dance With the Vampires’ from Meatloaf, Phil Collins and ‘Tarzan the Musical,’ ‘The Times They are A Changing’ from Bob Dylan and ‘The Last Ship’ from Sting all had runs on Broadway with moderate success.
