Rare Archival Footage of Young Prince Unearthed

Thanks to a few Minneapolis journalists, some rare footage of an 11-year-old Prince has been unearthed.

While working on uncovering footage for an unrelated news story about educator strikes, some WCCO reporters discovered a clip from 1970 including footage of several children being interviewed.

“I immediately went out to the newsroom and started showing people and saying, ‘I’m not going to tell you who I think this is, but who do you think this is?'” said Matt Liddy, production manager for WCCO, before bringing in specialists to extract the audio from the clip.

As seen in the video below, the voice of a young Prince can be heard talking about his support of the strike. “I think they should get a better education, too, because, um, and I think they should get some more money because they [are] working extra hours for us and all that stuff,” he said.

The identity of the late, beloved musician was confirmed by an old schoolmate, Terrance Jackson, who also happened to play drums in Prince’s high school band, Grand Central.

“That’s Skipper! Oh, my God!” Jackson said, using a childhood nickname as the video brought him to tears. “Mark my words, you guys have found a real gem.”
