On Wednesday, Young Dolph was shot and killed while he was buying cookies at a Black-owned bakery in Memphis he would visit frequently.

The rapper, a Memphis native, was 36-years-old and was known not only for his music but also for his generosity toward the community. Just two days before his passing, he had just finished visiting the West Cancer Center, where he made a promise to “donate turkeys to the Memphis community at a variety of community centers across the city before Thanksgiving.”

Other large-impact acts of charity from Young Dolph include a 2020 donation of $250,000 to Hamilton High School and mentoring the children of incarcerated parents.

“This is a nice young man, he was down to earth,” Memphis community leader, Pastor Rodney Herron, said. “I am distraught, because I knew what the young man was doing for the community, how far he was going to go in the community. … He came back to where his heart was, and he always gave.”

Police are still investigating the shooting, and many fans have already begun to memorialize the rapper with flowers and condolences at Make’s Cookies, the bakery in which Dolph frequented throughout his life and, unfortunately, where it ultimately ended.
