World Champagne Day, celebrated around the world on October 18th, is a day on which wine lovers of the world are invited to pay homage to the drink of all celebrations, champagne (and any other sparkling drink)! The principle of Champagne Day – under the banner of joy and good humor – is simple: raise a glass filled with bubbly and toast to life.  Celebrate this joyful day of sparkles by sharing your emotions and your favorites in photos or videos on your favorite social networks with the hashtag #ChampagneDay! As the famous 17th century Benedictine monk Dom Perignon, credited with developing the methode champenoise once said, “Come quickly, I am tasting the stars!”

Did you know that even though Dom Perignon came up with the methode, beginning in the early 19th century it was the women running some of history’s most recognizable champagne houses who pioneered the attributes we consider mainstays today. From the iconic bottle shape to the clarity of the vintage, from that crisp, brut flavor profile to the marketing of champagne as a wine of luxury, it was the so-called “merry widows” of champagne – Madames Cliquot, Pommery, Henriot and Laurent-Perrier who turned bottles of bubbly into a world-famous celebratory sip.  Their innovations were to be continued by Lily Bollinger into the 20th Century, so hats off to these fine ladies of champagne!

“I drink Champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it—unless I’m thirsty.” – Lily Bollinger

Want to delve even more deeply into the effervescence?  Get out your passport and take off to Troyes, in the heart of the French Champagne region, where they hold an entire week of celebration and festivity (from October 15 to 19, 2019)!
