We have many strong and incredible women in sports these days, from the women Olympic stars, to the William’s sisters of tennis, women have worked hard to break the glass ceiling in sports. To help celebrate the achievements of women, February 7th is ‘National Girls and Women in Sports Day’ in America, marked with speeches and celebrations.

‘National Girls and Women in Sports Day’ began in 1987, then-President Ronald Reagan signing a proclamation declaring it as ‘National Girls and Women in Sports Day.’ The day has since been recognized by Congress for the purpose of honor girls and women in sports, at the profession and amateur levels, of all ages.

What is the genesis of the day? It seems that in 1987, the day was originally meant to remember and honor Flo Hyman, an Olympic volleyball player who died of Marfan’s Syndrome in 1986. Flo had been a long proponent of equality for women in sports. To find an event on February 7th in your area, click here.
