Elton John grew up in a single parent home under the birth name of Reginald Kenneth Dwight, becoming a folk then pop star, crystalized by meeting lyricist Bernie Taupin in the early 60s. “Lucy in the Sky” is the Beatles’ song that hit number one in 1974. The original was inspired by a drawing painted by John Lennon’s young son Julian, and covered by Elton. John Fred and his Playboy band hit the charts with a parody hit called “Judy in Disguise.”

“Philadelphia Freedom” was indeed about tennis star Billy Jena King w2hom Elton had befriended, a tune to celebrate the Philadelphia Freedom a local tennis team. Elton performed the song on the popular ‘Soul Train’ dance show later in 1975.

“Candle in the Wind” was a big hit for Elton in 1973 a tribute to the late Marilyn Monroe. The song had two famous moments; the first when Elton performed the song to honor AIDS victim Ryan White in concert in 1990. Ryan died the flowing day. The song was also re-written accommodate the funeral of Princess Diana. It’s been reported that Elton has never song the song again after that deeply saddened day.
