Mj Rodriguez Makes History as the First Transgender Person to Win a Golden Globe

On Sunday, Michaela Jaé “Mj” Rodriguez received the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Drama for her performance as Blanca Evangelista on the FX series Pose. This is a history-making win, as Rodriguez has now become the first transgender person to receive a Golden Globe.

While the 79th Annual Golden Globes award ceremony was completely private with no red carpet nor telecast, Rodriguez did not let the lack of glam stop her groundbreaking celebration.

“This is the door that is going to Open the door for many more young talented individuals,” she wrote on Instagram after her win. “They will see that it is more than possible. They will see that a young Black Latina girl from Newark New Jersey who had a dream, to change the minds others would WITH LOVE. LOVE WINS.”

Rodriguez followed up her initial post with a short video posted to her Instagram Story.

“This is for the LGBTQAI, Black, Latina, Asian [communities], the many multi beautiful colors of the rainbow around the freakin’ world,” she said. “This is not just for me, this is for y’all. This is the door that opens for y’all.”
