Marc Jacobs Opens the Vault

Iconic designer Marc Jacobs has never been afraid of looking at past designs to give him fresh inspiration, but this time he’s not just looked, but opened the vault with his Resort 2019 collection. In lieu of something new, the designer has reproduced his famous Spring/Summer 1993 “grunge” collection for Perry Ellis, which debuted in the fall of 1992 at New York Fashion Week. Jacobs has reproduced twenty-six looks from that groundbreaking, polarizing line exactly, utilizing all the original prints, fabrics and embroideries, down to the shoes, jewelry and accessories, and he’s calling the line, appropriately, ‘Redux.’

Jacobs is going all out to promote Redux, beginning with the November 7 release of a Juergen Teller-shot look book and a cross-promotion on the social channels of both Marc Jacobs and Perry Ellis. The collection will be sold online starting November 15, and available in brick and mortar stores (including a pop-up on Madison Ave in New York City) on November 19.

“The ‘grunge’ collection epitomized the first time in my professional career I was unwavering in my determination to see my vision come to life on the runway, without creative compromise,” Jacobs said in a statement. The first time around, the line was reviled by critics and caused Jacobs to be fired from his head designing job at Perry Ellis, which had previously been known for “classics with a twist,” shortly after. However the collection, a high fashion version of the Seattle street scene, made Jacobs an international star and eventually became seen as a seminal turning point in 90’s style.

While Redux is wholly a Marc Jacobs production, Perry Ellis shared historical assets and will promote the line through its own markets. Jacobs, whose brand has somewhat waned over the years, could get a huge boost from the opening his grunge vault.
