Liz Smith, New York’s ‘Grand Dame of Dish” Passes

Liz Smith, the ‘Grand Dame of Dish” has died at the age of 94. Hollywood and entertainment have always been interested in gossip, the whispers that ended up in print have always been part of the business. In the early days of Hollywood, everyone played nice with Hedda Hopper; after all, she could make or break a young star in her “Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood” column. In New York, Liz Smith carried the torch, writing in the New York newspapers for decades.

Over the years, she became friends with Carol Burnett, Jackie Kennedy, Barbra Walters, Bette Midler and other stars in New York’s Broadway and television society. Towards the end of her life, she often told friends and interviewers that Hollywood and New York gossip was all she ever wanted to do. Liz Smith, a dominating writer, and woman of yesteryear are gone at the age of 94.
