On Wednesday night, June 5th, Keith Urban took the stage at the CMT Music Awards to present his touching new single, “We Were.”

Despite taking home a CMT Music Award for a different track earlier in the evening, the country superstar was not done stealing the show.

Urban offered an intimate performance of his reflective track that touches upon his upbringing with walls of lights propped up behind him and the crowd pushed up to the edge of the stage. Keith was introduced by pop singer-songwriter Julia Michaels; Urban and Michaels’ tune “Coming Home” earlier won the Collaborative Video of the Year trophy.

“I like the idea that life just happens,” Urban said in a press statement of “We Were” upon its release last month. “At some point, whether in the moment or not, you just gotta go with it.”

“We Were” represents the country veteran’s first new single since the release of Graffiti U, his 2018 album. The new track was co-written by Eric Church and co-produced by Urban.
