After years of knocking around garage bands and playing small venues, John hit it big in 1976 Johnny Cougar by signing with a small label, releasing his debut album ‘Chestnut Street Incident. At the time he was going by Johnny Cougar but eventually changed his name back to John Cougar Mellencamp. A few years later he would drop the Cougar altogether.

“Pink Houses” introduced John to a whole new pop audience in 1983, inspired by his driving outside Bloomington, Indiana one day, passing an elderly African American man sitting outside his little pink shotgun house.

“Jack and Diane,” “Tumbling Down,” and “Small Town,” were all big hits for John, helping him get elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
