New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion has just landed her second Best Director nomination at the Academy Awards for her 2022 film The Power of the Dog, making her the first woman to be honored with two nominations in the acclaimed category.

Campion’s first Best Director nomination was back in 1993 for her film The Piano. This recognition was also quite notable, as it made her the second woman ever to be nominated in the category after Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties in 1976.

In Oscars history, a female director has only been nominated 8 times, made up of seven women in total. The other five filmmakers are Sofia Coppola in 2003 for Lost in Translation, Kathryn Bigelow in 2009 for The Hurt Locker, Greta Gerwig in 2017 for Lady Bird, Emerald Fennell in 2020 for Promising Young Woman, and Chloé Zhao, also in 2020, for Nomadland.

If Campion wins this year, it will make her the third woman to ever nab the Oscar for Best Director, after Bigelow and Zhao.
