Hayao Miyazaki Comes Out of Retirement (Again) to Make a New Studio Ghibli Film

It was nearly eight years ago when prolific Japanese director, writer, and animator Hayao Miyazaki decided he would “retire” after decades of beloved creations including My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Ponyo, and many more.

In 2017, though, Miyazaki teased his fans with a reconsideration of his stepping away, as he confirmed that he would be directing a film based on a book by Japanese writer Yoshino Genzaburō. 

Almost four years have gone by without an update regarding his creative return, but Miyazaki has finally re-emerged with a tell-all profile about his life, creative journey, and—of course—a few more details about his this new film, How Do You Live?  

The film is about a 15-year-old boy living in Tokyo who is “small for his age and fond of mischief, and whose father recently passed. Not much else has been revealed, but fans of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli will be awaiting more news as time goes on.
