The 60s was a decade of turmoil, political change, social upheaval, and music that would be hard to categorize today. There were so many music genres colliding with one generation of sound. Here are a few of the most interesting groups and songs from the most turbulent decade of all time…

Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground was a progressive rock band that became the first band to use suggestive lyrics and experimental sounds for their songs, often times getting banned from FMs at the time. It’s thought that the band regularly dropped acid when writing and recording their tunes.

Sly and the Family Stone broke all the rules, combining rock, funk and soul to hit the charts with songs like “Stand,” “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” and “Hot Fun in the Summertime.” The band was admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Frank Zappa and his Mothers of Invention combined jazz and rock, adding a bit of comedy to their tunes. Imagine a song that had the lyrical verse “Movin to Montana Soon, gonna be a dental floss tycoon.”
