Gabrielle Union Speaks Out Against Disney’s Response to Anti-LGBTQ Bill

Gabrielle Union is not afraid of speaking the truth.

The actress recently spoke out very clearly and critically of Disney’s response to the passing of Florida’s new legislation, now known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which prohibits discussion about sexual orientation and gender identity in primary school classrooms.

“I don’t want to say shock because hatred doesn’t shock me at this point,” Union expressed when speaking about the legislation. “I’ve been a Black woman in America since ’72 — nothing shocks me. But the fear that gripped me because I know what this leads to.”

“I don’t even think that’s a word that you could use for something like this, where children’s lives are literally hanging in the balance. We need to own that if you truly are taking stands against hate and oppression, you should not fund hate and oppression. Period,” she continued. “The damage is done.”

Union, who is in Disney’s Cheaper By the Dozen remake, also shared that she is not scared of Disney’s reaction to her outspokenness.

“I will never know how my name is spoken of in rooms due to me telling the truth, right? I have no idea,” she explained. “Luckily, there’s enough other companies willing to hire me, knowing that I tell the truth, and I will not be held back by fear [of taking] my career away.”
