Don’t Get Backed Up During the Holidays

The holiday season is upon us, and for many, that means the arrival of family and friends, some for a meal, some for several days. The house is decorated, you’ve got your menu all prepped and ready to go. What you don’t need is for the toilets to start backing up. Or the garbage disposal to go on the fritz. Or your pipes to decide to burst.

There is a lot that can go wrong down below when you’re cooking and cleaning (or well-meaning guests are helping) and you’re not paying attention to what is going down your drainpipes. Now is a great time of year to call a plumber to check out and clean out you’re your system before the onslaught of holiday visitors that will put an unusual strain on your plumbing. Did you know that plumbers refer to the day after Thanksgiving as “Brown Friday?” It’s true.

If you haven’t had your septic or plumbing system checked in awhile (or ever), it’s a really good idea to call a professional to do an inspection. If he/she finds a problem, they can usually roto-root the whole enchilada for a couple hundred dollars.

And to help prevent an incident, make sure you dispose of all kitchen scraps and grease into a separate container, like an old pot, bucket or can. And make sure anyone helping you in with food prep and clean up knows about it, too. When the grease has congealed, you can toss the whole mess into the trash and keep it out of your pipes.
