Don Fielder, original member of the Eagles, performed in Detroit a few weeks ago. He stopped the show mid-stream to talk about the late Glenn Frey, what it meant to be his peer. You may remember that Glenn’s hometown city is Michigan’s Royal Oak, and the citizens are still struggling with his departure.
The Royal Oak School Board this past spring paid its native son and Eagles founder, the highest honor by naming a section of Willis Avenue in downtown Royal Oak as “Glenn Frey Drive.”
Glenn sang background on many of the late 60s Bob Seger singles, who remained close friends to the legendary Motown rocker until his death.
As a member of the Eagles, he’s received six Grammys and was inducted as an Eagles member to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
Glenn’s song “The Heat is On” appeared in the Eddie Murphy movie Beverley Hills Cop, and he starred as a smuggler on an Miami Vice TV episode in the mid-80s, using “Smuggles Blues” the single as part of the soundtrack.
Glenn was married twice and left behind a wife from his marriage in 1990 and three children.
