Detroit sports has gone through a tough week and it’s not because their teams for the most part struggling. No, we’re talking about saying good bye to two of the most storied arenas in sports as Joe Louis Arena and the Palace of Auburn Hills were both put to rest recently.
Joe Louis Arena was built in 1979 and saw the impressive 25-season playoff streak from the Red Wings start and finish. The Red Wings have won 11 Stanley Cups in their day with four of them coming when they called this arena their home. They also won 16 of their 19 division championships and all six of Presidents’ trophies they have won as well.
The Palace at Auburn Hills may not actually be in the city of Detroit, but it’s close! It’s a suburb of the city and was the home of many teams during its day, but was mainly known for it being the home of the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons made some magic in that building, It was built in 1988 and saw an NBA championship won in 1989. It would see another in 1990 and in 2004 as well. This was the home of the “Bad Boys,” one of the most iconic NBA teams of the past 30 years.
