This weekend the city of Detroit and the sports world lost a great one. The owner of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings, Mike Ilitch, passed away at the age of 87. Mr. I as the players knew him was one of the best owners in sports and the city of Detroit owes a lot of their rebuilding success to him.

Ilitch was most known for his work with the Tigers who became a threat in the American League about 10 years ago due to Mr. I’s willingness to take chances and spend whatever it took to win games. He bought the Red Wings in the early 80s and the Tigers in the early 90s.

Mr. I founded Little Caesars Pizza allowing himself to be able to own two teams in the city of Detroit. At the time of his death Forbes says he was worth over $6 billion. He would play baseball in the minor leagues for the Tigers, but would never elevate himself to the big leagues. Mr. I founded his first Little Caesars in Garden City, Michigan in 1959.

Mike Ilitch you will be missed. Rest in peace.
