It has been recently revealed that actress Christina Applegate has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. On Monday night, August 9th, the star took to Twitter to reveal the news to her fans and the rest of the world.

The National MS Society says that multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. There’s no known cause for MS, but scientists “believe that a combination of environmental and genetic factors contribute to the risk of developing MS.”

The society says, “The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease.”

“Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS,” Christina tweeted.

She continued, “It’s been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition. It’s been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some asshole blocks it.” She added, “As one of my friends that has MS said ‘we wake up and take the indicated action.’ And that’s what I do. So now I ask for privacy. As I go through this thing. Thank you xo.”

Christina was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2008, and had a double mastectomy to remove both of her breasts. She wrote her cancer battle into her Netflix series Dead to Me.
