“While I’m incredibly flattered to be considered ‘pop’ as a 40-year-old crooning lesbian mother,” Brandi Carlile expressed on social media yesterday in response to the Grammys moving her single “Right on Time” from the American roots category to the pop category, “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit surprised and disappointed.”

The song—after being submitted for the record of the year, song of the year, best American roots song, best American roots performance, and best music video categories—has ultimately been accepted in the all-genre record of the year, song of the year, and music video categories for the 2022 Grammys.

Carlile, in her statement, said she considers Americana to be “more than a genre,” and that it is a culture and community that represents so much about being a “misfit” in the world. The six-time Grammy winner stands strong in her musical identity, saying that the category change by the Recording Academy “doesn’t change who [she is] or what [her] Americana community continues to mean to [her].”
