In seeking those elusive Instagram follower fame, people have gone food-trend foolish.  One of the worst seen this year is shellacking your edibles with the precious ore.

Gold flake-dusted dishes seem to be everywhere these days, but why stop at flakes when your entire dish could be covered in gold? From chicken wings to chocolate, dusting food with gold is the latest edible trend to be embraced by chefs and restaurants around the globe. In Japan, Gold Kit Kat bars have gotten the Midas touch, and sushi chefs are adding gold toppings to make their nigiri sushi stand out.  A hip restaurant in New York now serves gold-basted chicken wings and gold donuts are becoming a thing.

Our two cents: (a) It doesn’t change the flavor, doesn’t improve it in any way, so it’s pretty, but pointless. (b) Gold flakes aren’t broken down by the body, so that is one heck of an expensive #2 you just flushed down the drain.
