A Band Deserving of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The Grass Roots churned out hit after hit in the 60s and early 70s, and although they have not received the call, the band richly deserves to be anybody’s Hall of Fame. The members of the band came from Los Angeles and were actually the studio group for successful songwriters P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri.

Said differently, two talented songwriters needed a band to sing the songs they were writing. The lineup of the band continued to change, at one point there were two Grass Roots bands touring the country. The most successful version of The Grass Roots eventually sold over 25 million records! The only original member to remain in the lineup consistently through its years was Rob Grill. Rob died in 2011.

The Grass Roots are only a handful of bands to have played the most cherished outdoor festivals in the day, almost by accident. The San Francisco Pop Festival in 1968 allowed the group to debut “Midnight Confessions” their latest single that was just beginning to climb the charts. The other big event or break for the Grass Roots came with their appearance at both the Los Angeles and Miami Pop Festivals in the fall of 1968, providing the perfect stage (pun intended) for that same song, which at that point needed a boost to hit the top 10; which it did due to the exposure.
