Cacti aren’t limited to the desert anymore. The prickly plant and its cohort, the succulent, are the latest home decor trend and the new darlings of homes thanks to their low maintenance and fighting spirit.

Last year’s houseplant craze revealed a lot of black thumbs, Brown said, “Now people are looking for plants they can keep alive. … They are learning about plants that are survivalists.” Look for succulents with novelty blooms and creative shapes. “We’re seeing different cacti coming together in really cool arrangements,” said Brown.  If you’re not sure you want the prickly plants all over your house, you could dip your feet in the sand by building a DIY Cacti Terrarium.

And let’s face it, cacti are cool.  Their unusual shapes and bright desert flowers make them perfect for decorating, but sometimes their prickly spikes can be a bit unfriendly. So if you’re a bit leery of buying some actual plants, try cacti decor instead, which is popping up everywhere, from Target to Bed Bath and Beyond to Etsy. Get the look of live cacti without the thorns by incorporating chic wallpaper, bright bedding, pretty wall art, and other funky accents that feature the warm-climate plant into your home.  That way you can look AND touch.
