It’s Tie-Dye Time

The great (or perhaps most frustrating) thing about fashion, is when you get old enough things just come back around and are stylish again. And guess what’s on that fashion Merry-Go-Round in 2019?  Tie-Dye.  Ah, but don’t kick yourself for finally tossing that frayed t-shirt in the trash bin.  There are absolutely scads of tie-dye pieces out there, from dresses to shirts to pants to shoes and more, offering ways to spice up your wardrobe and, of course, add fabulous color to your look.

Lest you think you’ll look like a Grateful Dead wannabe, designers like Christian Dior, Stella McCartney, Luis Vuitton and Calvin Klein beg to differ, although there was a plethora of Dead Head homage seen at the R13 Spring 2019 runway show this year.  But here’s the point:  the “new” tie-dye is le chic, dahling.

Where tie-dye clothes from years past evoke images of the ’60s and ’70s—or at least memories of haphazardly dumping colorful dye onto cheap T-shirts—contemporary tie-dye clothes are in luxe fabrics and edgy designs, as evidenced in the Spring 2019 offerings from design houses like Altuzarra, John Elliott, Collina Strada and Eckhaus Latta. Everyone who’s anyone seemed to show a little pop o’ tie-dye in their recent collections.  Heck, even Kim Kardashian was peddling the stuff in her Kimoji collection.  Once-distinct shades haven’t blended together to form striking new tones; they’re starkly separate, acting more as a print than a fusion of color.

Though this 2019 fashion trend is just getting started, it’s already trickled into some of your go-to fast-fashion retailers. You can splurge on a Marques’Almeida Satin Tie-Dye dress for $557, or go for Satin Ti-Dye trousers for $69 at Urban Outfitters.  By shopping designer and budget-friendly pieces, alike, you can get a rich and varied glimpse at the trend.  In 2019, the tie-dye is your oyster.
