Halle was born in Cleveland and given the birth name of Maria Halle (named after the grand old Halle Building in Cleveland of all places), eventually winning the Miss Teen All-American Pageant, representing her home state of Ohio in 1985.
This honor opened the door to modeling, which led to her role on the weekly TV series, Living Dolls. Her big Hollywood break came in her role as a crack addict in the Spike Lee epic film Jungle Fever.
