The Best Clubs in Rock and Who Rocked ‘Em

Most live concerts are held in respectable, clean venues, deemed family safe and relatively new. We know however that rock and roll began in the early 60s, and the places bands made their fans go to were not often that exotic. What are considered today the best to rock out in?

The Cavern at 10 Matthew Street, Liverpool, England became famous after the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Animals, and Elton John made their way to the stage. The venue is often referred to as the ‘birthplace of the Fab Four.’

Hollywood’s Troubadour on North Santa Monica Blvd. and Whiskey a Go Go became the place to be seen in the early 60s to mid-70s. James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Elton John put the Troubadour on the map, while Whiskey a Go Go on the sunset strip hosted a young Motley Crue, Johnny Rivers, Doors and Janis Joplin.

CBGB’s at 315 Bowery, New York, New York was the hopping place in the late 50s and 60s, attracting Debby Harry and Blondie, The Ramones, Patti Smith and other ‘punk’ sounding artists.

The original or western Fillmore located at 1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco became the place for the day’s psychedelic performers, from The Dead to Janis.
