Kate Mara stars this weekend in the movie ‘Chappaquiddick,’ a film based on actual events involving Ted Kennedy in 1969; a car accident that took the life of Mary Jo Kopechne, and almost ruined Ted’s political career. Kate stars as Mary Jo, proving her versatility and range of acting. The film also features Clancy Brown and Bruce Dern.

The film is based on true events, as on July 18th, 1969, Ted and Mary Jo’s car tumbled off a narrow bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, MA. According to Ted’s own testimony, he was able to swim free after making several attempts to save his companion. He left the scene and didn’t report the accident for nearly 10 hours. Kennedy took a guilty plea for leaving the scene of a crash, receiving a two-month suspended jail sentence. This accident became international news, eventually dissuading Kennedy from running for President in 1972.

Kate Mara is an accomplished actress, reaching worldwide fame from her work in the Netflix political drama, ‘House of Cards,’ and in blockbuster films like ‘Shooter,’ ‘Brokeback Mountain,’ and ‘We are Marshall.’ If you’re a real movie fan, you’ll enjoy ‘Chappaquiddick,’ this weekend at your neighborhood theater.
