The 70s was an interesting decade in that we saw the beginning of a few music genres; The Eagles picked up the Folk Rock flag, Lynyrd Skynyrd the Southern Rock Banner, Genesis (with Peter Gabriel as lead singer, yes Phil on drums) the Progressive Rock Genre, Fleetwood Mac the ‘studio assembled’ sound, and finally Disco.

Soul was the sustaining sound through the turbulent waters of the 70s, so let’s salute a few of the best Soul.

Motown continued to spin its magic in the 70s, The Spinners, the Temptations, Diana Ross as a solo artist who moved to New York, the Four Tops who continue to provide pop songs like “Ain’t No Woman Like the One I Got,” and Steve Wonder who began a synthesizer journey, all hit the charts with hit after hit.

Philadelphia began to make noise with producers Gamble and Huff, crafting the ‘Philly Sound’ from TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) to the romantic Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and Sister Sledge. MFSB (Mother, Father, Sister, and Brother) and the late Billy Paul made the world take notice. Who can forget the soulful sounds of the Stylistics?
