The 2017 MTV Music Video Awards were announced last month, reminding all of us of the long tradition of unexpected moments and scandals. The MTV Video Music Awards are live in TV Sunday, August 27th, 8 pm on MTV.

The first VMA Awards were held in 1984 in NYC at the Radio City Music Hall.

Peter Gabriel won 10 MTV Awards in 1987.

Rose McGowan, Marilyn Manson’s girlfriend came out to the red carpet in 1998 and someone notice she forget to get dress for the event.

Someone made the mistake of inviting Andrew Dice Clay, who didn’t disappoint as he introduced Cher in 1989 with such flare and vulgarity; the MTV board banned him for life.

In the inaugural year of 1984, Madonna came out in a scandalous wedding gown and grinded herself on the floor.

Kid Rock and Tommy Lee actually got into a fight over Pam Anderson, in what’s called the ‘slap heard around the world.’

Who could forget Brittney Spears and Madonna passionate kiss in 2003?

The biggest moment came in 2009, as Taylor Swift was interrupted by an incoherent Kanye West during her acceptance speech.
