Congratulations to Spain’s Sergio Garcia, winner of this year’s Masters. Sergio outlasted Britain’s Justin Rose in a one-hole playoff, earning his first green jacket. Winning a major golf tournament is special, but winning the Masters on the birthday of his fellow Spaniards and late Seve Ballesteros’s 60th birthday made this victory incredibly memorable. Seve was Sergio’s mentor, losing his life to a brain tumor in 2011.

Sergio made his Masters debut at the age of 19, winning other tournaments, but the Masters win had always eluded him until now. There are two kinds of tournaments; the typical ‘John Deere’ or ‘Doral Open,’ and the four days set aside for the greatest golfers to compete in what we call ‘Majors’ tournaments. The Masters is the year’s first major, played at Augusta National Golf Club, the course legendary Bobby Jones built after retiring from golf in 1930.

You can be sure Seve was looking down from heaven Sunday, pleased that his young protégé Sergio would don the green jacket in his honor.
