Although the Allman brothers have lost a few of the original band members in recent years (Butch Trucks 2016, Duane 1971, Berry Oakley 1972) the remaining members and label are expected to release an eight-disc of set of every song heard from their three-night stay at the Fox Theater in Atlanta from 2004, called “The Fox Box.’ In our opinion, here are the best tunes from the brothers from the south…

“Whipping Post” written by Gregg is the perfect southern rock anthem. That new FM radio in the late 60s was looking for songs to play, suffice to say this tune showed up in the nick of time for progressive rock FM radio.

Sure the hit single “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” was too commercial for the faithful fan, but it did bring a new audience to the show and increase record sales.

“Blue Sky” from the “Eat a Peach” LP was written by Dickie Betts inspired by his girlfriend whom he would latter marry, Sandy “Bluesky” Wabegijig. Just listen to the marriage of Duane and Dickey in perfect harmony on lead guitar – there is no better partnership on vinyl.
