January 16, 1979 a star was born, but we wouldn’t know it for many years. Aaliyah, the incredible singer and performer, was born 28 years ago this week, yet we no longer get to see her shine on stage anymore. She died in 2001 in a plane crash heading back home to America after leaving the Bahamas.
It’s at this point we want to remember this bright, talented and young star we didn’t get to fully enjoy. Aaliyah was born in Brooklyn, but grew up in Detroit, being molded into the star she would become there. Before she would eventually pass she was known as the “Queen of Urban Pop” and the “Princess of R&B.”
Aaliyah’s debut album, “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number,” broke her into the music world by selling over three million albums. Her second album, “One in a Million,” would sell even more albums than the first, breaking the eight million mark before it was all said and done. The last album we would get from her was “Aaliyah.”
On August 25, 2001 we lost a great one, but her music is still heard and loved today. Rest in peace Aaliyah.
