Singers and songwriters work hard to make your favorite music, earning Grammys, Billboard Awards, and sometimes Oscars if a song is used in film; all are wonderful honors. Perhaps the most heralded recognition is that from the Presidential Medal of Freedom award, handed out each year by the White House.

Announced just this week, Bruce Springsteen and Diana Ross were chosen to receive the award from a list that also included Tom Hanks, Vin Scully, Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Robert Redford, SNL creator Lorne Michaels, Bill and Melinda Gates, and television host and actress Ellen DeGeneres. Previous winners in the music world have included James Taylor, Emilio Estefan and wife Gloria, B.B. King and Stevie Wonder.

The awards ceremony will take place at the White House November 22nd.
