How about another rock and roll A to Z? Here’s the letter “I.”

The band Iron Butterfly was an interesting four member group from San Diego from the late 60s for a few reasons. Lead singer Darryl DeLoach’s parents let their teenage son have his friend over to practice their rock and roll in their garage, and they became pretty good. Butterfly released their debut album in 1968, and while on tour they met Jimmy Page who mentioned that their name inspired them to call themselves ‘Led Zeppelin.’ Nice!

“In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” was their biggest and only hit, topping the FM album charts in 1968. Here’s something you may not have known; it was never a song. The boys were waiting for their producer to show up while in a New York record studio, so they just started playing. The sound guy rolled tape, never telling the boys they were being recorded, and everyone though the 17 minute song should be on the album.
