We’ve been talking about the Billboard Music Awards all week, so why stop now? Let’s talk how these winners are determined and some previous winners…

The BBMAs are unique in that they are decided by numbers and not votes. The winner is decided by whoever has the most airplay, downloads, and sales in the United States according to Nielsen.

Trying to figure out who has won the most awards? Well, that honor goes to Janet Jackson with her 33 wins. Eight of those wins came in 1990 when she took down awards like Top Billboard 200 Album and Top Hot 100 Song.

The BBMAs have gone on since 1989 with a hiatus between 2007 and 2011, but the most awards won by one artist in one year is Whitney Houston with her 15 in 1993. This of course was the year that “I Will Always Love You” came out and was on The Bodyguard Soundtrack, which both awards.
