One of the worst kept secrets in life is the reason young men spend hours upon hours learning to play the guitar, drums, or keyboards. Is it to raise their SAT scores? Do they wish to entertain their mother bridge club, play in the church orchestra? Oh no, they learn to be rock and roll stars – and get the chicks.

So imagine the look on a promoter or record label executive’s face, when a young man shows up to a meeting with a violin or flute in their hands? Well, rock and roll is filled with non-traditional musical instruments played by accomplished artists, creating music we really dig. Here’s part one of “Unusual Instruments of Rock” – a few of the names we know and love.

Jethro Tull and his flute as heard in every song he performed. Weird Al” Yankovic used his Accordion on many of his best songs. The The melodica was prominently played in ‘And We Danced’ by the Hooters.
