David Robert Jones, better known as David Bowie, died a while ago and we can’t help thinking about his contributions to Rock ‘N Roll. Here’s part one of our look at David Bowie…
Most people don’t realize that he changed his name to David Bowie from David Robert Jones, because Davy Jones of the Monkees was stealing all the headlines. He didn’t want to be confused with someone who is was on TV playing a rock star.
One of the early songs that truly set David apart was “Space Oddity” from 1969. Man had just landed on the moon and Major Tom was a fictional character in the song.
“Rebel Rebel” released a 1974, was a popular song in the early days of punk, and the “Diamond Dogs” album on the road to commercial success. You might say it was David’s farewell to glam rock, but the song did contribute one of the most copied guitar riffs of all time.
“Dancing in the Streets” was a duet with Mick Jagger that had huge commercial success, and was released in 1985. The duet was performed at the “Live Aid” charity concert that year, and was one of David’s best charting records.
