Yesterday, the nominations for the 2021 American Music Awards were announced, including a hot lineup of contenders for the coveted artist of the year title.
The nominees for the category are Olivia Rodrigo, BTS, the Weeknd, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Drake.
Many of these prolific and popular artists of today have had a great year of releases and influential projects, including the quick-rising success of viral, new artist, Olivia Rodrigo, with her debut album Sour having earned seven AMA nominations in total.
BTS has had a number of chart-toppers this year including “Butter,” “Permission to Dance,” and Coldplay collab, “My Universe.” The Weeknd has six total nominations, Taylor Swift–the 2020 winner of AMA artist of the year–is an undoubtedly strong name to beat in the category she has had seven prior nominations. Ariana Grande is not new to the category either, with three other nominations over the years, as well as Drake with four.
