This Superbowl Sunday, show your Pork Rind Appreciation!

National Pork Rind Appreciation Day is celebrated on Super Bowl Sunday each year. Time to grab a bag of pork rinds and settle in for a fun day!

Pork rinds (known as “chicharrones” in Mexico), which are crispy snack chips that have been made from deep fried pieces of pig skin, have found renewed popularity because they can be included in a Paleo and Ketogenic diet plan. This gives people more reasons to celebrate and dig in!

In case you were wondering, Pork Rind Appreciation Day started in 2011 when Rudolph Foods (the largest manufacturer of Pork Rinds) declared the day a National Day.  As well as starting the day, Rudolph Foods agreed to make charitable donations in return for online support of the day. Thousands of consumers supported the idea of the national day and Ohio governor John Kasich also issued a letter of support in 2012. And those folks at Rudolph sure were smart when they decided it should fall on perhaps THE biggest snack day of the year!

According to” Always the Holiday“, here are some fun facts about pork rinds:

• Nutritionally, pork rinds contain 9 grams of fat, 17 grams of protein and contain no carbohydrates.
• In Brazil, pork rinds are called torresmo.
• Thailand’s version of pork rinds are called khaep mu.
• The Mexican variety of pork rinds are known as chicharrons.
• Westminster, Ohio, with a population 300, is known as the ”Pork Rind Capital of the World.”
