Here are the Post-Quarantine Hair Trends you’ll want this Summer

If your local hair salon has safely resumed business, and you’ve assessed the risks and decided to go ahead and book an appointment, there’s one big question left: What are you actually going to ask for once you sit down in the chair? Since you likely haven’t seen your stylist in three to six months, you might be grappling with an internal monologue that sounds something like: Do I lean into my new longer hair and just go for a trim, or chop it all off and start fresh?

To help in planning for your upcoming appointment, the editors at Refinery 29 talked to a few trusted stylists who gave their haircut predictions for summer 2020. From a short and shapely crop to the perfect restorative mid-length lob, here’s a peek at the budding styles poised to be in high demand post-quarantine.

Rounded Crop. According to celebrity hairstylist Graham Nation, now’s the perfect time to try the short cut you’ve always wanted. “Post-quarantine, I see women doing something drastic that they’ve always wanted to try,” he says. “A longer, slightly rounded cut is totally chic and no fuss when it comes to styling.” If you have curls — like Nation’s most recent client, model Tabria Majors — and are looking to quit the heat styling this summer, he recommends scrunching Unite Curl Cream through your damp hair then letting it air dry.

Grown-Out Bob. If you had a bob pre-quarantine, it’s probably a lob by now. But if you’re kind of feeling the new longer length, Nation says to lean all the way in. “With bit of extra length and light styling, a grown-out bob is ideal for summer,” he explains. At your appointment, simply ask your stylist to dust off your ends. From there, the styling opportunities are endless: Go with a bouncy blowout, or add a baseball cap, like Nation’s client Maggie Keating.

Mid-Length Cut. A bit longer than a shoulder-length lob, a mid-length cut is another summer sweet-spot. According to L.A.-based stylist Chaie de Jesus, it’s a great refresh for anyone with long hair looking for a change that’s not too drastic. “A mid-length cut with a little internal movement is my most-requested cut, and it’ll be perfect for this summer,” de Jesus says. “It’ll grow out nicely and can still be pulled back.” For dream inspiration of a mid-length cut (plus sun-bleached highlights), look no further than supermodel Joan Smalls.

Long Layers. If you love your long hair, a few light layers can make a world of difference, says NYC-based stylist Angela Soto. “You might like the length that grew during quarantine,” she explains. “In that case, consider a face frame or light, long layers, which will help remove any dead weight.” If you’re working with extra-long ends — like ones falling close to your waist — channel a vibe like model Sara Sampaio.

Chin-Length Bob. If you’re looking for a fresh and clean change, consider a blunt bob. “There will definitely be a demand for clean, strong shapes after quarantine,” says Soto. “I think strong, blunt, chin-length bobs will be popular.” Here, actress Bruna Marquezine makes the case for a sleek and smoothed, center-parted style.
